Engraving with hand colouring, mid 18th Century

Image: 318 x 204 mm Plate: 354 x 255 mm Sheet: 371 x 240 mm

Originally drawn by Louis-François Petit Radel (1740-1818) and engraved by Robert Bernard (1734-1777) and published on laid paper in "Encyclopédie" Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire Raisonné des sciences, des arts, des metiérs by Denis Diderot (1713-1784) and Jean-Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert (1717-1783) in Paris, 1751-1780. This engraving illustrates the making and cutting of a Turkish rug included in one of the greatest achievements of the Enlightenment, this extensive encyclopedia.

A particularly decorative image with both a sense of movement and whimsy, it would make an excellent addition to a bedroom or dressing room.
